Published by Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre on the occasion of the exhibition (23 July - 8 September 2022), Beyond Drawing was designed by Oonagh Young at Design HQ, produced by Drawing deCentred and features essays by writer and curator Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith and artist and curator Arno Kramer, alongside installation documentation by Jed Niezgoda of the works in the galleries at Uillinn by the artists Felicity Clear, Marleen Kappe, Romy Muijrers, Kiera O’Toole, Marisa Rappard and Mary-Ruth Walsh. The publication was launched with a talk on drawing by artist Brian Fay. Brian Fay’s practice is rooted in drawing and he uses the materiality of pre-existing artworks and objects to examine our complex relationship to time. Abstract
"In the early stages of my practice I drew from and drew on a renowned beach in Dublin, Ireland. I drew shells, shadows, a bridge and I collected driftwood and washed up crates and bottles containing human waste and birds’ bones. The drawings that emerged from this period sparked my interest in how the phenomenology of place has the capacity to determine one’s mark-making. These unsuccessful attempts at articulating the non- representational aspects of place prefigures my concerns around drawing as a phenomenological way of being in the world..."

"DO ACCIDENT, LOSS OF CONTROL AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE MEDIUM INFLUENCE THINKING?

As a mode of thinking and doing, drawing offers myself as artist researcher the possibilities of gaining new experiential and tacit knowledge through the materialising of the mark. From an intuitive process of drawing, a subjective dialogue of enquiry negotiates the shifting and unpredictable conditions where drawing begins to draw itself. Taking an approach towards drawing that is open-minded, unknowing and inquiring, opportunities arise to generate conditions where the unfolding of unexpected embodied and tacit knowledge can emerge..."
